Hello detectives! There is a scheduled AO3 maintenance that will go into effect and will apparently last for 15 hours, which will impact nominations as AO3 will be down during this period. Please view their "What time is it for me?" so you can plan your nominations accordingly. As we may miss a day to nominate, I've chosen to extend nominations to Saturday 24 January. [ In your timezone + Countdown ]

*

Please review our nomination guidelines before nominating. There's an opportunity to transfer accepted tags from the 2025 tagset to the 2026 tagset.

I'm seeking clarifications on the following nominations. If I could hear back about these, that would be appreciated so we can keep our nomination approvals moving.

All Media Types + Related Fandoms
Can the nominator(s) please amend their nominations? We do not accept "All Media Types" and "Related Fandoms" without a case being made.

    Transformers - All Media Types
    Any Decepticon Character
    Drift | Deadlock/Perceptor
    Impactor/Springer (Transformers)
    Megatron/Rodimus | Rodimus Prime
    Optimus Prime/Ratchet
    Ratchet/First Aid
    Rung & Whirl (Transformers)

Can the nominator please renominate this under the desired series? Are you after the Michael Bay or animated movies? The video games? Books?

Crossover Fandom

    Crossover Fandom
Avengers Team Members (Marvel) & Loki (Loki TV)
Avengers Team Members (Marvel) & Mobius M. Mobius (Loki TV)
Loki & Sylvie (Loki TV) & Thor (Marvel)

Can the nominator please update their disambiguations for the Marvel portion of these nominations? The disambiguation is too vague. Is it MCU? Marvel 616?
    Sorted!

    Crossover Fandom
Phryne Fisher (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries) & Jane Marple (Agatha Christie)
Phryne Fisher (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries)/Lucifer Morningstar (Lucifer TV)

Can the nominator please specify which version of Jane Marple and Phryne Fisher they would like? It seems the character of Jane appears in books, TV and anime, and Phryne in books and TV. If you're happy to receive any version, please let me know and I will accept these as is.
    Sorted!

天官赐福 - 墨香铜臭 | Tiān Guān Cì Fú - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
Xie Lian (TGCF) & Wei Wuxian (MDZS)

I'm canon blind to the canons in the disambiguations. Can the nominator, or someone familiar, please confirm if this should be nominated under "Crossover Fandom"? The disambiguations imply it should be. Can the nominator please renominate this under "Crossover Fandom" so it can be accepted?

Recursive fandom missing permission statement proof

Rigel Black Chronicles - murkybluematter (DFE)
Arcturus Rigel "Archie" Black/Hermione Granger (Rigel Black Chronicles)
Draco Malfoy & Pansy Parkinson & Blaise Zabini (Rigel Black Chronicles)
Lionel "Leo" Hurst/Harriet Potter | Rigel Black (Rigel Black Chronicles)
Solo: Aldon Rosier (Rigel Black Chronicles)
Solo: Harriet Potter | Rigel Black (Rigel Black Chronicles)

Can the nominator please provide proof of the permission statement for this work? I approved these and cannot find any evidence that the nominator has provided a permission statement for this work. Our nomination guidelines state that recursive works need permission evidence provided by the nominator. If it's not given by the end of the nomination period, I will remove these tags from the tagset.

Please read up on the nomination guidelines for recursive nominations and be sure to provide evidence!
    Sorted!

Other

Lucifer (TV) — Does it belong in DC's Arrowverse?

For those familiar with Lucifer (TV), do you think this show should be considered under the DC Arrowverse umbrella? I'm only familiar with Lucifer's involvement in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event and the ramifications of that. I'm happy to keep it separate, but I wanted to check in with nominators/interested parties to see if it should go under our DCTV umbrella. Sorted! Keeping it separate. :)

There are queries from the first nominations post that I'd appreciate the nominator's input on.

Please let me know on any nominations post if you see any duplicates or errors (like typos!) in the tagset. We've had some wandering tags a few detectives have successfully captured (thank you!). Happy nominating!

Straight forward killer nature movie about wild dogs attacking people in the bumfuck nowhere outbacks of Australia. You here about the killer spiders, snakes, and prison deer that terrorize Australia, but I always forget about the wild dogs that are known to carry off pets and children when you're not paying attention.

Haven't seen a movie about killer canines since I last watched 2006's The Breed when I was younger. Not really much of a plot, just killer dogs terrorizing a family going through some money issues. There's plenty of tense moments as these dogs stalk the family in their home and the parents have to remind them they don't pay rent. Great for anyone who just wants a straight to the point killer animal movie; just don't expect much plot.

Don't really see too many killer cat and dogs movies anymore. I wonder if we'll ever see another killer cat film like 1991s Strays.

Fandom: Transformers (Bay Movies)
Pairings/Characters: Bumblebee/Ironhide
Rating: Not Rated (I’m going to say Teen And Up; this is brazen steaming erotica, but performed in terms that circumvent meat-centric censorship laws.)
Length: ~800
Content Notes: Alien biology, fusion as relationship, Pervy Human Fancying, size difference, transformation kink
Creator Links: (AO3) [archiveofourown.org profile] crimsonclad; (LJ) [livejournal.com profile] crimsonclad

Theme: Crack Treated Seriously, Pre-AO3 Works, Rare Pairings, Robots, Androids & AI, Worldbuilding, Xeno/Alien Biology

Summary: It was many years since Bumblebee had taken a lover, and as he looked up at Ironhide, he could feel his body trembling. "What do you think we will become?"

Ironhide smiled, and the familiar metallic sound of that motion made Bumblebee shiver. "I don't know, 'Bee. But I can't wait to find out."

Author’s Notes: Perhaps I am more comfortable writing porn with no recognizable gonads????

Reccer's Notes:

Bumblebee's first partner-- so long ago-- had been a sweet thing, and the result of their coupling-- a windmill, turning lazily in the winds of Cybertron-- had been as gentle and solid as their relationship. Once, in the later days of the war, Bumblebee had thrown caution to the wind and mated with an old friend turned traitor, temporary truce formed through their mutual desperation. The result had been a ravenous sawmill, capable of churning through any kind of metal. The sheer power had been intoxicating, but afterward, Bumblebee had felt empty, used. Lonely.

But so many years later, curving up against Ironhide's warm bulk, he knew this would be different. He knew they couldn't help but become something wonderful.

This is another fandom where I scarcely go (and therefore don’t know how common this trope is), but transformation and fusion here become an ecstatic discovery in ways that anticipate Steven Universe. (And don’t miss the avalanche of gleeful bawdy squee in the comments!)

I also loved Abigail, ready or not, the hunt, cabin in the woods, the move with the blind lady who fought back. I don’t like sexual assault scenes or revenge due graphic rape scenes.

Please recommend something where the protagonist wins and or the antagonist wins bc there’s a plot twist etc and there’s a cathartic ending!

Thanks gang

Honestly, from their actions and words as a vampire, being a vampire seems pretty fucking sweet. of course, there are obvious drawbacks to being a vampire, but it seems that a lot of them were like "bro....this is sweet u gotta try this".

of course, they were all tapped into a hive-mind of sorts, sharing memories, experiences and knowledge. but tbey clearly retain their own personalities. they grieved when their human friends were killed in the final barn fight, and Stack was very much himself at the end of the movie. they can clearly be reasoned with to a degree, as per stack. Tapping into the hivemind even seemed to wipe away prejudices, such as the Klansmen that were initially turned.

obviously Remmick probably should have sought informed consent before turning them into vampires. but again, its not like he was killing them. or wanted to go on some crazy campaign of wanton torture and violence. he just wanted Sammie to bang out some crazy tunes so he could talk to his ancestors. in exchange, immortality and free from prejudice. you can clearly live out some kind of normal life as a vampire, again as per Stack.

if im in that situation, i probably take that deal.

Barely knew this movie even came out. I vaguely remember seeing trailers for it long ago, but was just reminded it was a thing when I stumbled onto it on Tubi. Love me a good creature feature once in awhile.

I give it a solid 6/10. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it for what it was. I didn't really love it like I wanted to. Felt disjointed at times, as if it wants to be camp, but not too camp. I laughed a couple times too, especially at that grandmother character. It take place entirely in this one location, but is very visually nice to look at.

I also have to add that spiders are a guaranteed way to make me squirm and turn my head from the TV, especially the small little bastards, so I know Infested will be nightmare fuel once I get around to watching it. And I mean that seriously. I don't know why, but the spider got less scarey the larger it got. The effects for the spider isn't bad either, it actually looks good, but something about making it larger took away some of the scare factor which is weird because the thing can even mimic people's voices. Would still set my house on fire if something like it was sharing the same space as me.

For me it’s a creepy or “messed up “birthing scene. Immaculate for example, I wasn’t scared once until there was child birth. Alien Romulus really made me squirm at the birth scene too. I can handle chainsaws all day but as soon as someone gos into labor in a horror movie I’m toast.

Edit: Forgot Welcome to Derry opening birth scene got me too.

So I'm gunning to watch one movie every week for the duration of the rest of my entire life starting 2026 and the 2nd movie I ended up watching is Visitor Q-- I HATE IT!

I was originally planning to watch Sinners, I had it all booted up and even got in like 5 minutes, but something wasn't clicking, so I just put it down and scrolled reddit for a bit. Here, I found this post- Well, "I found my limit," and then out of some morbid curiosity as well as just generally feeling like I could take anything, I decided to watch that as my 2nd movie instead.

1/10. 1/10. If 0.5 was an option I'd give it that too. I hated every second of every moment of this film. Every character (except the women) were EEEEEEEEEEEVIL. Every scene, it felt like they were trying to one up the previous one in revulsion and the creator was successful as all hell. I literally can't even go name them all because we'd be here for hours, but I just-- I can't.

The acting was good, the atmosphere was seriously skin crawling, and it was just... disgusting.

The pacing was really good, so every moment flowed to the next pretty well, though in the context of this film, that just means they throw you in a whirlwind of emotions.

Shit. Stuck. Shit, I WANTED TO THROW UP THERE.

I will say, the ending where it's played as like a twisted happy enidng genuinely unnerved me. There was a lot of shock factor disgust, but that scene was the most memorable for me just because of how... happy they framed it-.

I have yet reached my limit, but that was way past the point of something I'd just go to enjoy. That's... yeah... fucking weird.

I recommend this in a "I don't recommend this" sense.

Also I didn't get who was in the first scene till the end even though they showed her pictures. It just made me hate the beginning scene even more. I'm so never watching this movie again.

I ran across something kind of cool today. (I'm of the right age to still say 'cool.')

This afternoon I was doing a little clean-up on Find A Grave, connecting linking some relatives to their parents. Name: Mathewson. Wife's maiden name: Howard.

When I was finished with that I found myself wondering if anyone had found where Levi Peach Howard was buried. Was he not in Erie County PA, with his closest relations?

Aha! He was on Finda and correctly linked now - buried in California. Oxnard, seaside city. :-)

I could now update some information on the family tree. As I was doing so, I found that I already had more specific information (not on Finda) on where several people were born. One of these was "Howard Falls, Franklin Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania."

Not expecting much, I google Howard Falls, and was very surprised by what I found.

The Howard Falls Trust

The "About" page tells the story of how the Howard family came to Pennsylvania and developed a quarry business at Howard Falls. The Henry Howard mentioned (with brother Levi) married my great-great grandfather's sister.

The Cenobites are my favourite horror movie villains, but most of their films are just rubbish. The idea that there are these beings that can take you away to another dimension, where nobody can find you, from which you can't escape, is one if tte few genuinely horrifying ideas in cinema.

Conceptually it isn't far from the idea of hell, but I couldn't name a film which does that either.

Today I learned:
There is a unit of weight, grains, that goes into troy and imperial weights as a nice neat whole number
so you don't have to fiddle around with grams with approximations after a decimal
to try and
honestly
figure out what one Pathfinder gold piece is worth in today's gold market
(it is A Lot)(probably passed £1000)(that is so much more than it was five ten twenty years ago)

there will of course be a lot of fiddly decimals in the middle of your calculation
but
whole numbers of grains.

I feel like I learned a Key for old units
because my mum said there was a nice whole numbers one
we just didn't use it any more.

Had today off - since it's MLK's Birthday. (It's also a day of service, but alas, I'm being insanely lazy and resting my knees.)

Found out last night that my niece passed her EMT training and is a now a certified EMT. Also she may end up in Georgia at some point in May, with a course on how to prevent fires by setting them (burning off brush). My lovely niece is well on the way towards her goal of becoming a forest ranger. It's actually easier to protect trees than people. People are difficult. So, I'm glad she shifted from human rights to environmental protection and forestry.

I'm really enjoying my re-watch of Buffy and Angel. The later seasons hold up better than the earlier ones do - partly because the later seasons were done in the early 00s and not the late 1990s. So while there's still the errant - "I ran like a girl" - the other characters snort at it.

Season 7 and Season 4 Angel actually have some well-written episodes in there. Deep Down - S4 Angel, where Wes searches the ocean for Angel and rescues him, and Angel, Gunn and Fred confront Connor is a good episode. And Wes has become very interesting.

Also, the first episodes of S7 are really good. I find the series more entertaining now than I did when I initially watched it. Maybe because while I don't remember most of the details, I remember the final result, so don't have quite the same anticipation or worry that I had when I first watched it - when it aired for the first time in 1997-2003. Also, I'm not as invested in the romantic "ships"? I know they are all doomed. So, it's comforting in a way it wasn't back then. And, I'm not trying to figure out where it is going, or pulling it apart like a puzzle to figure out what will happen next. There's something to be said for not over-analyzing the plots of television shows?

Buffy S7 Takeaways?
Lessons through Beneath ME )

And Angel S4 is more enjoyable than I remembered. It's kind of obvious though that the writers are writing out Cordelia.Read more... )

Wes's arc is more enjoyable than Cordelia's. Read more... )

They brought in Gwen to chemistry test her against Angel and Gunn, as a potential replacement for Cordelia - I can tell. She got a back story and everything.

I don't remember most of this - or enjoying it nearly this much.

Outside of television watching - I did another watercolor. Not perfect. This is of a confrontation between a little old woman with a walker and big truck that I saw ages ago in Jamaica, but can still visualize.

Movie of the day...DINOCROC (2004)

Movie of the day...Dinocroc (2004).

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before. After discovering the remains of a prehistoric creature, a large and sinister corporation decides to splice its DNA with a crocodile to create a hybrid. It’s not entirely clear why they do this, except the creature produces a hormone that allows rapid growth, and a rather cold-blooded lady executive seems to think this has various commercial possibilities.

Naturally, the thing gets loose and starts terrorizing the local population. More specifically, the corporation has created two of the hybrids, and one of them eats its sibling. At this point, a young scientist goes into its enclosure, by herself, armed only with a stun gun, and without telling anyone else what she is doing. She also forgets to CLOSE THE DOOR to the enclosure. Anyway, after natural selection runs its course, the rapidly growing, clearly-willing-to-eat-anything hybrid makes its way out of its enclosure. And it seems NONE of the other doors in the lab facility are closed, either, despite it being nighttime, because the critter promptly makes its way out into the swampy wilderness surrounding the lab.

Did I mention there is a large lake with a swimming beach only a mile or so from the lab?

The cold-blooded lady executive is not amused.

Is the movie any good? Not really. It’s rather predictable (except for one very dark plot twist). Most of the acting is mediocre; the best performances in the film come from Bruce Weitz and Max Perlich in supporting roles. The film does try to avoid overusing its CGI effects, relying on shadows and filming the background of a shot in soft focus and so on, which improves some of the action scenes. Overall, though, it’s a pretty forgettable movie.

Rating: C-

Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel in portrait of a lady on fire

What’s the smell in the air? Is it roses? Chocolate? Body odor? No, it’s love! What’s not to love about a love story? They bring us joy. They make us cry. And most of all, they help us to believe in the idea that love is possible—that there’s somewhere out there waiting for every one of us. While the 21st-century dating pool can sometimes feel like a dating-app drenched situationship swamp, these ten films give us hope for love. Here they are, the ten best romance movies of the 21st century. The next time you’re thinking about dinner and movie with that special someone, why not take them to see one of these?

Portrait of A Lady On Fire

Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel in portrait of a lady on fire

Directed by Céline Sciamma, Portrait of A Lady On Fire is described as a sapphic period romance—I was sold from that sentence alone. Set in the 18th century, the story follows a painter named Marianne who travels to a distant island to paint the portrait of Héloïse, a young woman soon to be married off to a nobleman from Milan. As Titanic suggests, portrait painting is a rather romantic activity—lots of intense staring at one another for hours on end. As the painter observes the paintee, the paintee looks back into her, and finds a similar longing hiding in the expression on her face. You know that thing Nietzsche said about staring into abysses and how they stare back into you? For Marianne, the abyss is Héloïse’s eyes; she feels like she could just fall in—and Héloïse’s gaze suggests the same.

Horror in Colors

If you could choose a horror medium (book, movie, game, show etc) to represent a color, what would you choose and why? Your answer can be based on theme plot, mood, theme/symbolism, and/or color palette but choosing something with just the color in the title and the color not actually relating to the film is discouraged lol.

Some of my choices:

Red = Heart Eyes (romance, love, blood, slasher)

Orange = Trick ‘r Treat (Halloween, jack-o'-lanterns, Sam, Orange promotional art/font)

Yellow = Bone Tomahawk (dry sunny desert setting, Western, yellow and gold promotional art/font)

Green = The Happening (the significance of nature and Mother Earth)

Blue = 47 Meters Down (ocean, being isolated and alone, loss)

Pink = Color Out of Space (film’s plot, color usage, and special effects, cosmic, alluring but mysterious)

It doesn't strictly need to be a movie, but any form of media (as long as it's what I said): basically a monster hunts down people but then government goes "hey what's that" and absolutely blasts the hell out of it, showing that it wasn't a threat at all.

I am sitting in Gingko's favorite chair, which is an immensely comfortable yellow wingback that perfectly takes advantage of the sunny south-facing windows, which are extra sunny today because it is hideously cold and will continue to be so and worse for a week at least. Gingko is also sitting in this chair, which is not large enough for both of us, but my smart girl is making it work. This is a day where I am finally, after three days of ~decompressing, interested in things other than screens. Maybe it was taking that Adderall this morning? But I've been cleaning the leather accessories I've been collecting, plus polishing up some wood that's desperately thirsty (including a nice little cigar box from the thrift store!).

I'm spending so much time trying to find the next living spare where I'll land that I haven't made much effort to make the most of this one. Spaces, pruning, money... many thoughts )

But, okay, activities I prioritize and treasure and would like spaces for:
  • Crafting — printmaking, paper-mache, watercolor, comics, collage, tunnel books, dioramas, so much!

  • Tea and tea display, not just this big glorious shelf but an actual tea ceremony kind of spot (not low enough to the ground that Gingko could destroy it, though; sorry to any coffee tables, I don't think you're really in my foreseeable future)

  • Altar and tarot table + display — the presence of household altars was something I learned from [personal profile] shadesofbrixton and visiting Santa Fe, which I absolutely loved, alongside this phenomenal altered wall cabinet at [instagram.com profile] chicagoprintmakers that I can't find a photo of but trust me, I really want to replicate it

  • Music — I need to mount my banjo, ukuleles, accordion and other assorted instruments where I will see and want to play them!

  • Yes, I have a rowing machine which I love and which is collecting so much dust, but once my arm is better, I want to get it down again, I freaking love using it and I want a regular space for it in the next place

  • Reading nook!!!! With lots of plants!! What if!!!!
This is what I want to build!!! Not to mention space for hosting parties, including dinner parties, which my table deserves to see again!! It's really not true that everything will fall into place once I get this one thing (permanent living space) done, but it really feels like maybe it kind of will!!

Theme: crack treated seriously

Summary: Harriet Vane and Lord Peter Wimsey have triumphantly solved the Wilvercombe murder, and only want to return to London. But first they must solve a new mystery: why they have woken up in one another's bodies, and what on earth are they going to do about it?

Reccer's notes Bodyswap is a pretty cracky trope, but here [personal profile] nineveh_uk uses it very effectively to explore the nuances of the complicated and touchy relationship between Peter and Harriet. As the summary suggests, it's set straight after Have His Carcase, where in canon they seem somehow simultaneously closer to and further away from resolving their relationship than ever. The bodyswap twist doesn't make things any less confusing. The voice is pitch perfect: if Dorothy L. Sayers had thought to write this premise, this is exactly what it would have sounded like.

Hey all, as the title states, I’m curious about your favorite foreign horror films. I’ve realized I’m missing an entire world (literally) of great movies by mostly watching horror made in English speaking Western countries. I’ve seen a few foreign films, but I’d love to hear this group’s favorites.

Off the top of my head, I’ve already seen: The Ring, The Orphanage, Speak No Evil, and When Evil Lurks.

Movies about Guilt

I use to get these really terrible nightmares in which I had done something terrible (use your imagination), and was dealing with the guilt, regret, and fear of being caught. The nightmares never included the act-- only the aftermath. I suspect that these were brought on by watching Dexter and Breaking Bad, as both shows stir up that kind of anxiety.

I've seen two movies that centre around this theme: Caliber (which I loved, as much as it stressed me out), and The Coffee Table (just recently watched it). Caliber isn't necessarily a horror movie, but I think it's fair to call it horror adjacent, at least.

Can anybody recommend other good movies like this? It's a horror sub, but I'll take non-horror recs if they're relevant.

Thanks!

man shares customer issue (l) water heater in bathroom (r)

Times are tough. Wallets are tight. Small businesses seem to be shuttering daily. But honest, pro-customer, small businesses still exist, and they still very much offer more care and customer service than the megacorporations that threaten to render them extinct.

Jacob Collins (@jakeonthecoast) posted a helpful and heartwarming video on TikTok about an exchange he had with a customer in need.

Love Terrifier but never seen Bone Tomahawk. I’ve heard Bone Tomahawk is pretty disturbing (not that Terrifier isn’t) but I’m imagining that BT’s gore has a darker tone, whereas Terrifier’s is more Art being a silly little guy.

How would you compare the overall tone and intensity of the gore of the two movies?
