Today I learned:
There is a unit of weight, grains, that goes into troy and imperial weights as a nice neat whole number
so you don't have to fiddle around with grams with approximations after a decimal
to try and
honestly
figure out what one Pathfinder gold piece is worth in today's gold market
(it is A Lot)(probably passed £1000)(that is so much more than it was five ten twenty years ago)

there will of course be a lot of fiddly decimals in the middle of your calculation
but
whole numbers of grains.

I feel like I learned a Key for old units
because my mum said there was a nice whole numbers one
we just didn't use it any more.

First spray treatment for the bugs appears to have gone ok. Wrestled the cats into carriers and camped out in the building lobby for a few hours. Beatrice (the semi-feral) gave me a small scratch on the face, voided her bowels, and bellowed with rage and fear, but she and Nana were both pretty quiet in the lobby (there’s a gas fireplace, and we think they liked the warmth) and both appear to have now forgiven us (Beatrice came over for scritches a couple of minutes ago) although now I think I hear them growling and hissing at each other.

Tomorrow morning have to clear out the front closet/laundry room so someone can come clean out the ducts.

Write Every day 2026: January, Day 19

trobadora: (terrible)
[personal profile] trobadora
In the first draft poll, 30% of respondents usually produce a first draft that's very close to the final draft, and no one usually produces first drafts that barely bear resemblance to the final draft. And most respondents (57%) at least sometimes produce a first draft very close to the final draft. *g*

For the "usual" question, slightly more people have too-wordse first drafts (25%, compared to 20% for too sparse), whereas in the "sometimes" question, too sparse is more common (38%) than too words (23%).

(70% of respondents believe that tickyboxes know no such thing as overkill, btw!)

As for me, it differs wildly - I used to produce very clean first drafts that didn't get changed much during editing/betaing, but for the last several years now it's been much more inconsistent. The more I struggle with either writing or finding time/energy to write, the worse my first drafts get - because sometimes I just have to get something, anything, down first, or I won't get anywhere at all. But it's pretty frustrating, so I want to get back to how I used to write, and I need to figure out how to do that with less time and energy than I used to have ...

One thing's remained the same, though: my first drafts are generally too sparse, which is why they always grow - sometimes considerably - during editing as I flesh them out and add in all the things that I had in my head but didn't put in the actual text. *g*

Today's writing

Again not as much as I'd like. I need to actually sit down and finish something, but it's hard to find the energy.

WED Question of the Day

Today I don't have a poll, but instead a request for advice: when you're low on energy, do you have any strategies that make it easier to write? Or to get started writing, at least? Because I often find myself just staring blankly at a page for way too long until I somehow get going, and I'd really rather not. *g* When I have more energy, I can usually get there much more easily, which is really unfair. :p

(I want to be writing! I feel better once I actually get started writing! But getting there is such a pain on some days. *grumbles*)

I like to do my book shopping in person but I like the darker books, and I usually don't find very many of the titles I'm looking for. I'm wondering if bookstores actually avoid or reject certain levels of content, or is it just because their one singular horror shelf is too full of Stephen King and there's no room for others? Should I have hope, or give up and order online?

Holy shit did I love this book. I was a big fan of *The Troop* but disliked *The Deep*. This one has everything I wanted and more. For anyone who hasn’t read it yet do yourself a favor and skip the prologue, it’ll add a lot to the rising tension as you unravel the mystery of what happened to Margaret’s bestie.

The Possession of Alba Diaz

When a demonic presence awakens deep in a Mexican silver mine, the young woman it seizes must turn to the one man she shouldn’t trust… from bestselling author Isabel Cañas.

In 1765, plague sweeps through Zacatecas. Alba flees with her wealthy merchant parents and fiancé, Carlos, to his family’s isolated mine for refuge. But safety proves fleeting as other dangers soon bare their teeth: Alba begins suffering from strange hallucinations, sleepwalking, and violent convulsions. She senses something cold lurking beneath her skin. Something angry. Something wrong.

I love Cañas’ writing, but I felt that this book didn’t quite hit the mark. I never felt that the two main characters, Alba and Elías, were as compelling as they could have been. I never got to know them as well as I would have liked, and have come to expect from Cañas’ work.

I tend to think that part of the reason is that more time had to be given to explaining the situation, unlike her first two books where the situations were those most readers would be familiar with. Because of that, the romance side of the story was overwhelmed by the horror.

And horror there is in Alba’s possession. Some parts are out and out creepy and I liked that the reader is kept guessing as to what’s really going on and who can be trusted. But for my self, I would have preferred more time spent on the romance's development, which at times felt rushed.

I won’t go so far to say that I didn’t enjoy the story, because I did. But the book would place last in line when it comes to her three books.

Theme: crack treated seriously

Summary: Harriet Vane and Lord Peter Wimsey have triumphantly solved the Wilvercombe murder, and only want to return to London. But first they must solve a new mystery: why they have woken up in one another's bodies, and what on earth are they going to do about it?

Reccer's notes Bodyswap is a pretty cracky trope, but here [personal profile] nineveh_uk uses it very effectively to explore the nuances of the complicated and touchy relationship between Peter and Harriet. As the summary suggests, it's set straight after Have His Carcase, where in canon they seem somehow simultaneously closer to and further away from resolving their relationship than ever. The bodyswap twist doesn't make things any less confusing. The voice is pitch perfect: if Dorothy L. Sayers had thought to write this premise, this is exactly what it would have sounded like.

Hi,

welcome to the weekly chat corner. Have anything SW-related to talk about? Come and tell us.

Do you ever interact with Star Wars fans who aren't shipping-fandom fans? What has it been like?

I have a coworker who's a SW fan, and it's weird. He knows a lot of the lore, especially the older EU stuff, so I've had some really good talks with him, but the amount of times I did a tire-screech stop in the middle of saying something because oh SHIT, nope, that's shipping fandom, I will not openly admit to the guy I've read erotica about his favorite character...! I’ll start off by saying that I absolutely hated the book, and would not recommend it to anyone. It’s dubbed as psychological horror, mystery, and thriller. Personally, I think it’s neither of those genres. I saw a few comparisons to “The Haunting of Hill House” – not even close. SPOILERS!!! In the end, it’s just a sick book about child abuse, and mental illness that is disguised to be something more.

First of all, it wasn’t hard to figure out that the girl (Lauren), and the cat (Olivia) are the same “person”. It took me a bit longer to realize that Ted is also connected to them, and is a victim of DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). So once you know (more or less) what’s going on, it’s just a matter of time before you recognize that the bad guy is… Mommy.

So here’s where I’m a little lost. Mommy abducted Lulu when she’s apparently still alive after hitting her head on the rock by accident. What happened after is a bit mirky. At some point Lulu either dies from her injuries or Mommy kills her. Then what is that tape with Lulu’s (older) voice on it? Also, it appears that Mommy buried the body in the woods with other (5 or 6) children but later on decided to rebury her in the Chihuahua’s lady backyard? Why?! And the biggest one is: What actually happened to Mommy? Did she kill herself? That’s highly unlikely given that she was a serial killer. When the “possum detective” asked Ted about it, he said “you’re better off not knowing”, to which she responded “then consider this conversation never happened.” Does that mean Ted have something to do with her death? I mean, he did make “the gods” with her body and possessions for a reason, right? Lots of loose ends, if you ask me.

All in all, a very disappointing read, and nothing more but a convoluted mess. The book, however, reminded me of a movie “Identity” with John Cusack that I watched a while ago, and that I really enjoyed. So if you’re in the mood for a decent thriller flick with some actually unexpected twists and turns, check it out.

So, I work on two farms, both horse farms, and i'd like some books that won't scare the ever living crap out of me, since I am a huge wimp. i'd love some books that don't involve these things being scary, please.

Woods(one of the farms is essentially in the woods.)

animals, especially horses and cattle.

being isolated with something, because i'm usually alone on the farms for atleast part of my shift.

Parasites, no leeches, nothing inside of anyones brains or bodies, no maggots eating (alive)people, i've read that before and the moment I found a grub in my boot at work I freaked out real bad.

No devil/demon summoning stuff being a big part of the plot please.

Please, no 'this thing goes inside people homes/closets/under beds', It's fine if its just a haunted house that has ghosts and stuff in their house, but if theres something that just goes in random houses, I will convince myself it is in my house.

I also don't love psychological thrillers.

Sorry, i'm a little picky! I do really like horror, but I'd like a book I can listen to at work and not too scared to walk across the property alone. For reference, the only other horror book ive listened to at work, was about 2 years ago, it was The Haunting of Hill House, and I was completely fine.

Bonus points if,

It has sea monsters

Fast-ish paced

On libby

Thank you:)

Of all the sports I do not follow, american football is certainly up there as a sport I do not follow.

However, of all the sports I do not follow, american football is one where I think they are doing their post season completely correctly: as single elimination.

Can you win a game? No? Okay, season is over, bye bye.

Yes, yes, the season goes on way too long into weather not appropriate for the sport; american football makes sense as a summer or autumn sport, not so much when it's snowing.

But they pick the location of the super bowl years in advance, they hype the fuck out of it, they make it an event, and they know three years in advance what day it will be.

They have achieved marketing perfection and among the reasons they can do that is: SINGLE ELIMINATION PLAYOFFS.

There is one author I find gets talked about in here a lot, and that is Stephen Graham Jones.

Loads of people talk about his releases as if they were instant classics. The Only Good Indians is praised for being one the diffinitive folk horror stories. Loads of commenters recommend I Was A Teenage Slasher and it's ilk under every slasher recommendation. And his latest release, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, has gained an instant following.

But unfortunately due to a past experience with his literature I can't quite bring myself to be exited about any of these.

You see last year I picked up My Heart Is A Chainsaw. One of his most popular releases, and to say I didn't like it would be an understatement. Because out of all the books I DNFed that book was only one that felt like a slog. No other piece of literature has made me feel the things I felt about MHIAC.

I have already gotten into why I hated this book in previous posts in this sub. But to summarize, the main two gripes are how the mc of the novel seems to be fully outside the plot for at least a good part of the book (I wouldn't know) and how it leans into slasher troupes and references like a crutch.

But after reflecting on the reasons I hated that book, I can't help but wonder if I'm missing out on some great stories by going on a Stephen Graham Jones embargo. I want to try to read his stories that seem to be centered around great ideas, but I also don't want to waste my time with yet another stinker.

So I'm asking you all should I give Stephen Graham Jones another chance?

I took a break on Sunday. The weather here in Minnesota has finally stepped up to join the resistance. Today we are expecting -20 F/ -29 C windchills and yesterday the windchills were around -11 F /-23 C. I won't lie. I let Mother Nature take my shift. There were things happening, including my singing group, but I spent the day baking hot cross buns and snuggling under blankets.

Rest is resistance, too.

If you are not from around here and/or would like to watch [personal profile] naomikritzer talk about her experiences "commuting," and talk generally, along with Diana McCleery, about what things are like on the ground here in Minneapolis and St. Paul. My friend Cliff interviewed her on an SFF videocast:

It's a good watch? I will say that the guy who opens and closes the video, Bob, is a bit of a character, but if you can get past that and some of the echo in Naomi's microphone, it's very informative. Naomi recently did a ride-along with the folks who are self-organizing to follow and harrass ICE vehicles and so it's fascinating to hear how it's being done.

I always feel that people don't quite talk enough about the mutual aid that folks are up to--but the truth is the quiet revolution just isn't splashy enough for the front page.

Vacation

The pool's closure has felt kind of like a vacation for me in many ways. Which is weird because I do miss volleyball and I do miss swimming but I'm very much enjoying waking up with nothing I have to and nowhere I have to be. My sleep numbers are in the stratosphere.

But, hopefully, the vacation will be over soon. They are saying they hope to finish up the fix on Tuesday and have the pool open on Wednesday and probably warmed up enough for Volleyball on Thursday.

Oh fuck, the landscape guy just fired up the very loud hedge trimmer and it's just now 8 am. They are supposed to hold off until 9. Old people will be bitchin' today. This is where my neighbor Ingrid, will lean out of her terrace and screech at them to be quiet and then scream at them at length about why they need to be quiet. Irony and Ingrid are one and the same. She usually only comes to elbow coffee when she has some outrageous wrong she needs to have all of us help her correct. This could mean we see her next Saturday.

I have three free months of Apple TV but I really watched what I wanted weeks ago so haven't logged on. Last night I fired it up and ohnyfuckingod, Apple stopped just short of sending someone to take a DNA swab. First the message said my account was locked. I got it unlocked then I had to log in - the first of 5 - yes, that is FIVE times they required me to log in. Happily I had set up security questions and answered those several times - the same ones, over and over again. By the time I got Apple TV on my TV I was way too annoyed to watch any of their shit. I have no use for Apple - the hardware, the software, the company. None.

And I am kind of feeling the same way about Microsoft. Dick (of Dick and Jan) asked for my help yesterday showing him how to do something I showed him how to do a month ago - attach a One Drive document to email. That it was a repeat did not thrill me and then I could not figure out how to sort the documents to show him. It did not help that he kept moving the fucking mouse around while I was trying to figure it out. Also his data was at 98% on his machine so I knew it was going to freeze up beyond use any second. I got the document attached to the email and sent. He kept hitting send and sending the email over and over again with no attachment. Finally, I gave up and told him to call the IT guys. I have not used Windows in the last decade or more and I sure do not miss it. Also call the IT guys first next time.

I did get my closet emptied of shoes. I'll clear it out completely on Friday morning but until then, I'm set.

There is a new season of Night Manager so I thought I'd rewatch Season 1. But, turns out, I'd never seen Season 1! I finished it last night. Season 2 is a serial dropper and the last one won't be until the first week of February. I prefer to watch only when the whole season is available. So I'll hold off for now.

Ingrid has not done her balcony scream yet. I'm disappointed in the old girl.

The egg muffin situation is good. The ones I made reheated really nicely. In fact, they are a little better and easier to eat on the run (walk) when reheated. They are too big and not proportioned correctly but I can fix. I think what I really need is egg bites. I will adjust.

I am skipping exercise this morning. Since the pool is reopening, I am less motivated. The guy teaching today is really annoying. He only does the class on two Mondays a month and today is one of his. Plus, the class is at 10. So it makes no sense to shower and get dressed and then go sweat. So I come home and shower and dress and the day is half gone. Nope. (There is a MWF class earlier that is more advanced exercise. And I think there is even a killer class before that one. So I have choices. I chose none of them.)

Oh these landscape guys are really doing a great job! They are clearing out all the old winter stuff out of the beds and it's looking lovely.

Time to get into the shower and get dressed.

bookends

I know this seems like a petty thing, in these parlous times, but I am having a hard time finding bookends. We are finally, finally getting all the books out of storage and sorted and on shelves and they might almost fit if we have enough bookends. (If you're going to do part of a shelf as 2 rows of paperbacks, that needs at least 1 bookend to keep the last ones from falling into the larger books that are going as single rows.)

Where can I find plain metal bookends, like the kind they use in libraries? I do NOT want to get them from Amazon, for political reasons. Neither do I want to get them from Target. Once, I might have tried Home Depot, but it turns out that they are cooperating with ICE in deeply distressing ways so I don't want to do business with them either. Etsy is generally recommended as an alternative to Amazon, but they just have decorative standalone bookends. Some of them are really pretty but they are too bulky for this purpose.

Recent walks

We managed two walks last week, both just 4 miles. I had a lot to do in the week, so on Thursday we just walked to Penmaenpool and back. The weather was dull, so I didn't take any photos worth sharing. Saturday, however, turned out quite nice. Again I didn't feel like doing too long a walk so I drove us to Penmaenpool, left the car there and walked along the Mawddach Trail to Abergwynant, headed inland and walked back the short way through the woods.

Looking across to the sunny side of the valley.

Heading back to Penmaenpool. I always used to call this the Long Boring Bit when walking alone, but if walking and talking with a companion in sunny weather, it doesn't seem so long.

In further news of spring, there was a song thrush singing loudly somewhere in the trees beyond our back garden this afternoon. That's the first time this year that I've heard it. I know the song of the thrush, blackbird and robin, and also wood pigeon, seagull and buzzard, but I want to learn more bird calls and have just downloaded the Merlin app which many friends have recommended.

Idioms

It's starting to be a little lighter in the mornings when I wake up. Not actually light, but no longer pitch dark. Someone mentioned this last week in the weekly Welsh chat and our tame native speaker said that day length increases each day now "fesul cam ceiliog" (by a cockerel's stride). We all thought this was a lovely idiom. I don't know whether all Welsh classes are the same, but we always like to collect idioms.

And speaking of idioms, I'm reading Still Waters by E. C. R. Lorac and one character used the idiom, "A Parthian shot". I vaguely recall seeing it before but these days it's normally, "a parting shot". Having looked it up. the original saying came from the habit of the Parthian light cavalry of, when they were retreating (or feigning retreat), they would suddenly turn in the saddle and shoot an arrow straight back at the soldiers chasing them. It seems that some people still have the riding and archery skills to be able to do it, though this chap has a modern saddle with stirrups. The original Parthians didn't have that help.

Why do we enjoy what disturbs us?

So today I had a really interesting conversation with my girlfriend. We were watching a local YouTuber who was critiquing a silly book released by a TV character. At the end of the video, he mentioned that he was also reading some extreme novels, like Cows, Gone to See the River Man, and others, and asked the community if they would be interested in seeing critiques of those books as well. That’s when my girlfriend asked me why some people would want to read things that involve extreme topics like child abuse, animal abuse, gore, etc. From there, we started sharing our points of view.

On her side, she is a very sensitive person, and she really dislikes knowing details about dark or disturbing things that happen in the world. For example, when there is a shocking murder or accident in the city, she avoids learning more about it, because it reveals a world of possibilities that were invisible to her before. She also mentioned people who watch gore videos, and told me how much she hated it when, back in school or while hanging out with old friends, they would suddenly start sharing that kind of content. She finds it traumatizing to suddenly become aware of those atrocities. She described it as crossing a border or tearing down a wall in her mind, allowing horrible images to enter and remain in her memory. She also said that afterward she can’t stop thinking about those things, and that it makes her feel sad and anxious about the world. She would much rather learn about acts of benevolence or solidarity than about horrific ones.

In my case, I’m also a sensitive person, but I’m very aware of the atrocities that exist in the world, and I feel fascinated by them. I don’t experience pleasure in a morbid way when watching gore or reading extreme content, it affects me too. But in a strange way, being able to imagine the evil that exists makes me, by the end of a movie or a book, appreciate even more the goodness and kindness that are also real. There’s also something addictive about feeling discomfort, fear, and displeasure, and then realizing that you’re safe at home and that you’re not a monster like the one depicted in the artwork. It’s something I tend to compare to extreme sports or eating very spicy food.

What do you think about this? What is your point of view on this phenomenon of people being interested in extreme topics? What motivates someone to voluntarily expose themselves to traumatic images? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you everyone for this great community. You are the best!

I’ve posted here before and had success. But it’s been so long since I REALLY got into an audiobook! I just want a monster story. Preferably nothing supernatural (though that isn’t a deal breaker) but with basaas heroes. If you’ve seen the movie “Tremors” that’s what I want! A bit of cheese but a story that takes itself just seriously enough! Can anyone help me? Lol

Like I dont even understand this. What’s happening. Im about 75% done. Its like about this guys boring life. Talking about every mundane thing happening.

I loved the cabin at the end of the world and I liked survivor songs and head full of ghosts but this is just so strange.

That's me. I can't take anything that's too bleak, too bloody, too much suffering and pain.

I love the encounter with the unknown--monsters, ghosts, Eldritch entities. I love the rational skeptic seeing behind the veil, I love demons and unknown things.

But literally all the best horror lately has been stuff I'm too much a wimp for.

I read the summary of Tender is the Flesh. Sounds amazing! Definitely not going to read it. Buffalo Hunter Hunter? Awesome plot and meaning, but no thank you. Kids and animals die? No thanks, I'm good.

I can't be the only one, right?
