Does everybody know he's a ghost?

In an all-time record for my minimal presence in fandom, I am now participating in my third year of [community profile] threesentenceficathon. I have written four fills to date and taken the rare step of transferring all of them to AO3. Once again all selections are obviously me.

Recs

Posted by /u/Anakins_right_arm

Just wondering if anyone has any good serial killer recs that don’t turn out to be paranormal. Normal horror too that also doesn’t turn out to be paranormal, I’m tired of authors blaming everything on a ghost.

Write Every day 2026: January, Day 20

What I did during my lunch break: assemble Ikea shelves \o/
What I didn't do during my lunch break: write /o\

(And then the entire afternoon was non-stop meetings until smoke came out of my ears.)

Today's writing

A little more than an alibi sentence, but not much more.

Recommendations for the horror of the impossible?

Posted by /u/GrimbloTheGoblin

I just finished House Of Leaves and I love the way it used the horror of "the impossible."

My favorite kind of horror is when the audience and characters are presented with something uncanny that does not and cannot make sense. I believe Stephen King described it as "When you come home and find out everything in your house has been replaced with an exact replica."

Give me a modern horror author to binge

Posted by /u/chiwawaacorn

After a 20+ year break from reading horror, I've gotten back into the genre the past couple of years thanks to my teenage son. While I certainly have enjoyed many stand alone books recommended by this sub, more than anything I love binging an author and reading all of their works. Here are the more recent horror authors whose catalogs I've consumed. Who else should I read that's written more than 2-3 books in the past 20~ years (no King or Clive Barker plz, I grew up in the 80s and have read nearly all of their books). Excited for your recommendations!

Authors I've already binged (and enjoyed):

Nick Cutter

Paul Trembley

Joe Hill

Josh Malerman

Nat Cassidy

Jeff Long

Adam Nevill

Agustina Bazterrica

The Honeys by Ryan La Sala

Posted by /u/Mollysaurus

Holy fuck was this book a trip! I picked it up on a whim and was blown away. I don't usually get into young adult books that often, but this one is truly excellent. Gave me Yellowjackets vibes in the best ways. The audiobook was really well narrated, too. Some particularly creepy moments with voice acting.

Does "mother thing" pick up?

Posted by /u/spaghettipot

I'm at 48% on this book and I swear to God the only interesting thing to happen was in the first chapter. The rest has just been fairly typical hetero hell, neurotic pov. This book got such rave reviews and I am genuinely sick and in a bad mood this week. But this is so boring. Please tell me something interesting/tonally different is going to happen.

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James

Posted by /u/Poppstergalore04

I read the Broken Girls by Simone St. James years ago now. I still can’t get this book out of my head. It’s by far one of my favorites that I have ever read. Is there another book or author similar to this? I also like Riley Sager but I’m thinking more of a dual timeline/spookish vibes. Help! 🙂😄

Looking for a horror/thriller based audiobook! More deets on what I'm looking for below and I apprec

Posted by /u/heatherb2400

Soo... I'll admit I'm a little particular due to having adhd and being on the aphantasia spectrum (I struggle to create original mental imaging). It has to catch my attention from the go, so no real slow burns, not a big fan of ethereal/atmospheric, classic, or paranormal horror (more open to paranormal if it's highly recommended). I love to be shocked, edge of your seat, twists and turns, didn't see that coming type novels. Very little is taboo for me and traditional thrillers haven't been hitting the spot lately. Just no animal cruelty please. Thank you so so much :)

Other oranges are available

I started out writing this post as a way of getting something off my chest. If I write it down, perhaps I'll stop yelling at the radio every time they mention that TACO, Trump Always Chickens Out. Because the opposite is also true: maybe the President doesn't follow through on his threats, but he doesn't keep his promises either. Sir Keir tried to woo him with praise and letters from the king, to charm him with smiles and soap, and it worked for a while, and now it doesn't, and now what?

Anyway, that didn't seem like much of a post. So I thought I'd append a little sweetener, a piece from Saturday's Guardian about the Todoli citrus farm. Which is interesting in itself, and timely, this being marmalade season. But there's more to the story than chefs having fun with buddha's hands and blood tangerines. The Foundation's own website leans heavily towards art (Citron Lamps at the Dîner des Agrumes at Villa Medici. anyone?). And this video is all about biodiversity:

Animal Intelligence

Cow are the latest animals observed using tools, reopening the debate about animal intelligence

Researchers report the first documented case of tool use in cattle, based on a Swiss Brown cow named Veronika who doesn’t just grab an object and rub it against herself.

She chooses the “right” part of a tool for the job, changes her technique depending on where she’s scratching, and repeats those choices in a way that looks consistent and intentional.

Today is sunny and cold.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

Linguistics

Here's an interesting observation:

Hey ding-dongs, let’s have a chit-chat about Ablaut reduplication.

If you have three words, the order usually goes 'I-A-O.'
-tic-tac-toe

If there are only two words, ‘I’ is the first and the second is either ‘A’ or ‘O.’
-click-clack
-King-Kong

I can think of a few exceptions, like "bone-dry," and more rhymes like "helter-skelter." Some like "merry-go-round" seem to follow a similar high to low pattern.

Urban/local legend horror written by a woman?

Posted by /u/plsanswerme18

Preferably with a female protagonist, but that’s not a necessity.

I love horror that’s based local legends, real or fictional. Some of my favorite reads have been:

* Lute by Jennifer Thorne

* Briardark

* Where He Can’t Find You and Hunted by Darcy Coates, and I’ve already got Ghost Camera and Dead Lake on my tbr.

* Murder Road by Simone St James

* The Good House by Tananarive Due

* The Twisted Ones by Kingfisher (I’ve also read all of her other work as well! FYI)

* Whispers of the Lake

* Mister Magic and Hide by Kiersten White (didn’t love MM but wanted to include it)

* Near the Bone

TIA!

500+ page indie books

Posted by /u/Able_Zebra_476

Hey all, looking for 500+ page books by indie authors. Not the Ojanox omnibus, Ghostland omnibus, Helloween, or Blackwater. I have all those. I know longer books by indie authors aren’t as common but, hit me with your suggestion!
